At what point is a boat called a yacht?

Lucien Hellerman: There aren't any set guide lines for a boat to become a Yacht. However, many boat makers begin to sell boats of 27' and larger Yachts. My boat is a Motor Yacht at 60' and is also classified as such by the USCG with it's registration. I have seen Classification plates on boats as small as 27' listed as Yachts though.

Leann Villalta: Hi any boat can be called a boat except a ship. A yacht normally has sails exceptagain for large motor yachts. By the way a rule of thumb is a ship becomes a ship when a boat or yacht is to big to put on a ship.
