Should family physicians be trained in complimentary or alternative medicine?

Michelle Sohre: I think it would be very helpful if they were however, that would be double their time in medical school cause I am pretty sure naturopathic doctors go to school for the same lenght of time as general doctors.

Jacques Vaquera: I don't know that fully trained would be viable. But, I do believe that family physicians should have info about ALL the various potential routes to healing and wellness. As there are specialists in allopathy, so there are in the alternative medicine world. If the front-ling GP knows about all the options, and has the freedom to help his patient explore those options, they are going to be able to help more effectively. The battle between modern medicine and traditional medicine only hurts the patients in the end. Can you imagine if a math teacher was only allowed to use the times tables with their students, but couldn't address geometry or addition when teaching basic math concepts? In my opinion, that is what is happenin! g with medicine. Allopathy and pharmaceuticals have tried to shut down a completely viable maze of alternate treatments that can not only heal, but restore patients. If only GPs could say, "I can't help you, but here is the number of a naturopath who specializes in your disease; we'll set up an appointment for you before you leave the office today." Or, "there is a chiropractor in the next building who can fix that back injury up so you don't need surgery." Or any one of a zillion other potentially less invasive procedures and remedies. Well, that GP would be fulfilling his call to duty by aiding his patients in wellness and healing. The hump is the desire of the AMA and pharma cos to keep alternatives at bay and retain the profit for themselves. Alternatives work, and that is not going to go away. If GPs could be trained to know when and where to send their patients, we'd all be a lot healthier....Show more

Jorge Detlefs: Yes, I believe they should as they go ! hand in hand, and you would get the best of both worlds then, ! and save you having to take meds when there is an alternative.

Lucille Saetteurn: Oh yes! I saw a debate about this on the "Mike and Juilet Show" a week or so back, they may still have the info or video of this on their site - www.mandjshow.com. You can also check out www.drweil.com, he has tons of information on this topic there.

Judie Kise: Yes, I believe they should. I find that our doctors today are just in the business of putting band aids on our medical problems with drugs. But alternative medicine is more interested in fixing the problem and finding the cause. Dr. Weil is an excellent example of having both educational backgrounds. I had a first had experience that really hit home. My obgyn was ready to schedule me for a hysterectomy because of my bad PMS and I kept asking about natural hormone replacement and she said I didn't need it because I still had my ovaries. I found a specialist in alternative medicine that prescribed natural hormones and! I am now SOoooo much better and didn't have to have surgery....Show more

Janita Tetlow: At the very least they should have a "history of medicine". There wouldn't be time for them to train and they should be taught the basic theories behind a lot of them.Practitioners of alternative medicines - homeopathy, acupunture, Chinese medicine, etc. have trained equally as long and as intensely as the "medical "doctors.
